HISTORY
Back in 1996, the four founding members of our company (Jeff Brandstadt, Mike Krumme, John Freeman, and Al George) sat down to create a company name. One of the priorities in starting a new company was to put people first. This meant we wanted to develop strong relationships among our staff and with our customers. We didn’t want to be a nameless, faceless, evil CORPORATION, and instead worked on creating a warmer and friendlier name. The Articles of Incorporation were filed and Black River Systems Company was launched. Later that year, Black River Systems Company became an S-Corporation and WE received our first engineering services contract.
Black River Systems has continued to evolve over the decades, and in January 2021 the company transitioned to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Employees in an ESOP increase their company ownership stake as they gain seniority. This helps our employees feel more engaged and committed to the company’s success. While ESOPs comprise only a small percentage of small businesses across the US, they help motivate employees, increase retention rates, and often contribute to overall business longevity. Black River Systems has also instituted a Stock Appreciation Rights (SAR) plan that creates additional financial rewards to employees having valuable contributions each year.

Black River founders are engineers; our applied staff consists of engineers; our focus is engineering.
This means that we are good at what engineers do best – solving problems. Problem solving is what we do, and we do it very well. When we provide a solution that dovetails exactly with a customer’s needs and budget, we feel a sense of pride. If this means researching the latest academic advancements and providing a cutting edge technical solution, then that’s what we’ll do. If you need an engineered solution in the form of a software application, an algorithm, a system analysis, or an integrated system solution, then we’ll do it. Or, if it means getting out a roll of duct tape and patching a hole in your front bumper, then we’ll do that. We are engineers, which means we will work with you to solve your problem so you get exactly what you want, for the price you are willing to pay. We are excited to work new challenges, and we look forward to working with you.
